Ways to wellbeing

Museums and galleries were created to be centres for learning and wellbeing in their local communities. Visiting our museums will help you to connect, be active, take notice, keep learning and even give back to your community.

These are known as the 'Five Ways to Wellbeing', developed by the New Economics Foundation in partnership with Mind the mental health charity.

Being with friends and family is an important part of mental wellbeing. It helps people of all ages and reduces loneliness and isolation. Visit East Riding Museums to take part in activities or just enjoy the atmosphere.

  • Family friendly activities are available at every museum.
  • Enjoy coffee and cake at the café in Treasure House, Skidby Mill or Sewerby Hall
  • Book a meeting room for your group or business

Exercise is vital for both physical health and mental wellbeing. Regular moderate activity can reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress.

  • Our museums are different sizes and shapes to walk around and explore
  • Walk around our museum grounds or download guided town walks
  • Need a rest? There's plenty of seating at all of museums to enjoy the exhibits until you are ready to continue again

Being mindful of ourselves and our environment can reduce stress and improve our mental wellbeing. To be mindful, you can try taking notice of the details and each of your senses to ground yourself in the moment.

  • Stop to really look at artwork, notice the colours, textures and subjects
  • Imagine the work that went in to creating our museum collections
  • Learn about local life stories through time in our exhibitions

What's on

Participation in social and community life has attracted a lot of attention in the field of wellbeing research. Individuals who report a greater interest in helping others are more likely to rate themselves as happy.

  • Volunteer with East Riding Museums to help with research, children's activities, leading guided tours or making period costume
  • Join the Friends of Beverley Art Gallery to help preserve and grow the collections, attend exclusive previews and more
